Sailing in Croatia island of Hvar

What to pack when going on a sailing holiday? Here are just a few pointers to help you making your own list before going on a sailing holiday.

Luggage
Use lightweight and foldable sports bags that can be stored below deck. Suitcases take a lot of space and cannot be properly stored.

Paperwork

  • Personal documents: passport, personal ID card, driver’s license, medical insurance card
  • Money: cash, cheques, credit cards
  • Travel or other relevant insurance policy details
  • Yacht charter contract
  • Boarding pass
  • Skipper’s license (if chartering a bareboat)
  • Fishing license, diving or other relevant licenses
  • Address book with contact details and phone numbers of the yacht charter agency, port authorities, marina of departure & arrival or any other numbers you may need at any given time.

Wardrobe

  • Light set clothes for hot days – Consider a non-expensive light white cotton shirt with long sleeves. It may get dirty or greasy from using the sun-block but there is no better protection for your skin.
  • Warm set of clothes for cooler days or evenings – Even on hot summer evenings you may feel chilly after being exposed to the sun or just simply by being after a fun-packed day.
  • Waterproof gear in the case of rain and/or strong winds
  • Hat - When making a choice consider UV protection, size & shape to protect the face and back of the neck and a strap to hold it in place while sailing.
  • Footwear: non slip deck shoes, protective footwear for stepping into the shallow sea, comfortable shoes for walking on shore - Consider multi-purpose footwear such as Crocs or similar shoes.

Toiletry and Medicine Bag

  • Personal hygiene items – toothbrush & paste, soap, shampoo… etc.
  • Sunblock products for body face and lips – Consider UVA/UVB protection and high SPF, especially for fair skin or children.
  • Sunglasses and spare prescription glasses or contact lenses
  • Insect repellent – Usually not needed at sea but very handy for exploring the landscape and while docked.
  • Any medication you are taking regularly – Consider the length of your holiday.
  • Over the counter medicine for: motion sickness and nausea, fever, coughs and sore throats, pain, allergies, insect bites, cuts and grazes.
  • Thermometer and some waterproof plaster bandages – There is a First Aid kit on board but these may come in handy.

Personal belongings

  • Beach towel – Bathroom towels available on board, check the boat inventory.
  • Beach mat – Padded and water resistant types are very practical for keeping comfortable in the cockpit.
  • Flippers and swimming goggles or mask for snorkelling or diving equipment (Permit needed for a fishing gun!)
  • Fishing gear (Do not forget your permit!)
  • Mobile phone and 12V mains charger – Consider battery operated chargers for days when not docked.
  • Video and/or photo camera – Consider power supply and file download.
  • Sewing kit, scissors
  • Matches and/or lighter
  • Flashlight
  • Walkie-talkie set
  • CDs with favourite music (check the boat inventory for a CD player), MP3 player, a musical instrument
  • Brochures and guides on places of interest, books and magazines, board games, deck of cards, portable games console, laptop PC, drawing and painting set, a notebook for the ships log… and so on.

Shopping list
There are other items you will need that are too bulky or unsuitable for transport in the luggage so consider things that you can buy locally before boarding. There are many items that may be needed by everyone on board (such as kitchen rolls, paper tissues, washing up liquid, extra toilet paper, rubber gloves, tea lights, apron, some clothes pegs…) and that could easily be added to the grocery shopping list.
